In the Dutton Park river baths were opened, providing safe swimming in an enclosure off the river bank. The baths closed in The University of Queensland at St Lucia opened c. Harmony Gardens was a beautification scheme undertaken in and includes a wind sculpture that was a community arts project initiated by the Brisbane City Council.
Butterfly Playspace a playground with play equipment was erected in consultation with the local community and opened in Bounded by Gladstone Road, the South Brisbane Cemetery, the Brisbane River and residential land to the northwest, Dutton Park is a large irregular wedge of open grassed parkland falling steeply from Gladstone Road to the edge of the Brisbane River.
The park overlooks the St Lucia reach of the river and has a fine prospect to the University of Queensland campus.
A flood marker standing southwest of the soccer clubhouse records that on 29 January floodwaters in Dutton Park reached 9. The parkland is next to the South Brisbane cemetery which opened during the period when the Milton Cemetery was considered to be too close to the built-up areas.
Both the cemetery and Dutton Park run down from Gladstone Road to the Brisbane River, and the cemetery is listed on the Queensland heritage register. In the s several houses were built along Gladstone Road overlooking the river, and the new gaol was opened in Annerley Road formally Boggo Road in Next door the Dutton Park primary school was opened in Just beyond the gaol the Diamantina Orphanage was opened in , later evolving as a blind, deaf and dumb institute, the Diamantina hospital for chronic diseases and the Princess Alexandra hospital The concentration of institutional uses, industrial uses including Webster's, Davey's and Spearritt's bakeries left limited scope for residential development.
I of course thought it must have been an issue with the previous owner only to find that the suburb was quick to shift its harassment to others. My property consisted of two floors, and I was fortunate enough to live in one and rent out the other to students. While I owned the property 2 of my tenants over a year between each called police and ambulances appearing to have breakdowns complaining that fellow tenants and neighbours were harassing and trying to kill them and subsequently returned home to their respective countries in terror.
I thought the first incident was just the girl going nuts, and when the second occurred I thought it odd but still couldnt believe their wild claims. And then it started happening to me. Neighbours waging "noise campaigns" waking you multiple times every single night, people banging on your fence and gate and even my bedroom window, strangers parking immediately outside my house sitting in their cars for literally hours on end, using lasers to shine on my house and through windows, and even one instance where a woman banged on my gate on a Sunday and walked off to a neighbours house and when I asked her why she said she didnt want a confrontation as it was the weekend, then proceeded to call me a criminal and say that I was violent when I was anything but.
It has been simply a nightmare. And at the risk of diminishing my own property value I cant in good conscience recommend this suburb unless you are of the ilk to also contribute to community based harassment. If you do chose to buy or rent here, I wish you good luck. Btw I clicked the "Neighbourly community" in jest. It is anything but welcoming. Sounds like an issue with certain people unfortunate neighbours than a whole suburb.
