JAMA Neurol. Giving TMG to babies and children. Children need proportionately less TMG than adults, depending on their size and weight. Babies usually do not need it. Older children often need about mg daily.
TMG is available in a liquid and powder or crystals, and this may be easier to give to children. TMG during some retracing reactions. In many instances, taking extra TMG is wonderful to reduce healing reactions and retracing symptoms. If you are having a healing reaction or purification reaction, you may try taking more TMG, as it can help, in some cases. However, do not keep taking more than mg for women and up to mg for men for more than a week or so, as it is somewhat yin.
Dosage during some retracing reactions. Most people report no side effects at all from taking TMG. Most just feel better. Often they report a little better sleep and perhaps a little more energy, when starting. However, there are several cautions:. TMG is a water-soluble substance similar to some B-complex vitamins, most of which tend to be quite yin. This is important because in nutritional balancing science one must avoid most supplements, including especially those that are quite yin.
This is the reason to limit TMG intake, as explained earlier in this article. The reason for avoiding yin foods, yin supplements, and yin procedures, yin lifestyles and yin thinking is that the bodies are already much too yin, and balancing the physics qualities of yin and yang is amazingly helpful for healing the body, mind and soul.
A few people do not tolerate TMG well. They may just not need very much of it. However, our research indicates that, in some cases, the problem is that it brings up psychological issues or it detoxifies them too quickly. In particular, men or women who have deep-seated resentments and perhaps some ambivalence about men seem to have more trouble taking TMG. It appears that TMG activates an enzyme system that is dormant or less active in those with male resentment issues.
Taking TMG, for these people, can cause rather severe symptoms or anger, fear, depression or anxiety. If this occurs, just reduce the dosage to a comfortable dose. The symptoms promptly go away when one reduces or stops the TMG.
However, if one can tolerate the symptoms, one may move through the retracing of relationship issues much faster, so take what you can. Other research reports. These suggest that too much TMG can cause diarrhea and nausea, and may adversely affect the cholesterol level. So far, TMG seems very safe for pregnancy in the doses I suggest. So far, all our clients need to continue taking TMG for several years, at least. This is a subject of research. A few health authors believe that some people are overmethylated.
However, we have not found this to be true, provided that women do not take more than mg of TMG daily and men do not take over mg daily. One must also follow the rest of a nutritional balancing diet and healing program. TMG is used by the ton in the poultry and other livestock industries. There it is used as a food additive to help reduce the fat content of the livestock meat, improve the muscle meat, and regulate the amount of feed necessary to produce the best meat.
TMG is recommended for some autistic children. It is not a popular supplement for human beings, perhaps for several possible reasons:.
Methylation is somewhat complex. Most medical doctors, holistic doctors, nutritionists and naturopaths do not understand it well. For example, some doctors believe that a portion of the population is already overmethylated, and that more methyl groups are harmful. However, I have not observed this. To lower homocysteine, most doctors suggest other nutrients. These are a combination of supplementary vitamin B6, B12 and folic acid rather than TMG, even though TMG may work better and is recommended for inherited homocysteinuria.
The reason for using B6, B12 and folic acid instead of TMG is that B6 and B12 help move the methyl groups around in certain ways and B6 offers an alternative pathway for the conversion of homocysteine to methionine. I am not sure, at this time, which is best, but both methods work, to the best of my knowledge.
Perhaps TMG helps those who are on a nutritional balancing program more than it helps the general population. Our clients report great benefits, but I have not heard this from those who are not on a nutritional balancing program. I do not know why this would occur, but it may be that TMG works best in combination with the other aspects of a complete nutritional balancing program, for some reason.
TMG is not as well known by many in the nutrition professions. This article is designed to help demystify it. To learn more about methylation and TMG, please read Methylation on this website.

I am one of the people that can't take a full dose of NR due to the side effects. One of the reasons may be the methylation effect, and this may help.

Further clinical trials are needed. TMG administration in depressed rats changed their behavior. Human studies have not investigated the antidepressant potential of TMG alone [ 25 ]. This increase in TMG was associated with better reaction time, memory, and brain function [ 26 ].
Additionally, the participants with the largest increase in TMG levels had the greatest memory improvement [ 26 ]. According to one theory, children with Autism Spectrum Disorder have abnormal methionine cycles. The methionine cycle helps with blood vessel formation and other biological pathways. Abnormal methionine cycles can cause cognitive disorders. However, the methionine-autism theory is controversial and remains unproven [ 27 ]. Some researchers believe that autistic children do not have high enough levels of the by-products that are needed for the cycle and are also vulnerable to oxidative stress [ 27 ].
In autistic children, TMG and choline deficiency contribute to low methionine and SAMe levels, which can cause abnormal gene expression [ 28 ]. Oral supplementation with folinic acid and TMG normalized the methionine cycle in a small study of autistic children.
TMG also increased antioxidant levels, which protects against oxidative damage [ 27 ]. However, there is insufficient information about the effects of TMG on autism. Additional studies are needed to determine if TMG is safe and beneficial. In 21 healthy subjects, TMG relieved the skin irritating effects caused by detergents and decreased allergic responses [ 29 ]. Also, by acting as a methyl donor, it protected the cells from detergent attacks [ 29 ].
No clinical evidence supports the use of TMG for any of the conditions listed in this section. Below is a summary of the existing animal and cell-based research, which should guide further investigational efforts.
However, the studies listed below should not be interpreted as supportive of any health benefit. When TMG donates a methyl group, it helps produce S-adenosylmethionine, an antioxidant [ 6 , 7 ]. TMG also increases glutathione , another powerful antioxidant [ 7 ]. In rats, TMG pre-treatment reduced oxidative damage due to stress [ 30 ]. TMG is being researched for improving non-alcoholic and alcoholic liver injuries, though the existing evidence is inconclusive [ 21 ].
In the liver, TMG helps process methionine to produce S-adenosylmethionine, which helps lower inflammation. It can also help decrease liver cell death [ 21 , 31 ]. Even though the dosage was very high at 20 g daily , it could only stop fat buildup from worsening and could not improve the disease [ 32 ]. In a study of 29 nonresponders, more than half the patients responded to the addition of SAMe and TMG to conventional hepatitis C treatment.
Additional research is needed [ 34 ]. During cellular stress, it preserves cell volume without changing cell functions [ 35 ]. In mice, TMG supplementation lowered high uric acid levels, protecting the kidney from injury [ 36 ]. CCL4 can cause kidney cell death and cirrhosis liver disease [ 37 ].
Shampoos and other hair products can harm cells through osmotic stress. Since TMG is an osmolyte, it may keep hair cells hydrated and protect against environmental damage [ 38 ]. Shampoo with TMG protected hair protein structure [ 38 ].
Scientists are currently investigating TMG in human bone cells. TMG may activate pathways that increase osteoblast cell formation.
