Without it, your microphone will not work. Check with your camera manufacturer that 'Plug In Power' is supplied via your camera's mic input before deciding whether or not to invest in these particular microphones. Yes and no. Whether or not your mic will work into an XLR input will depend on which adaptor you have. XLR microphone inputs are commonly found in the professional audio industry, and are typically able to supply a power charge known as 48V "Phantom Power".
Most cameras and camcorders today will feature an industry standard-sized shoe mount directly on top of your camera. The shoe mount is the is the usual point available for external microphones, flashes, and other external accessories. Again, be sure to check the size of the mount on your specific camera. Just as with microphone input, some camera manufacturers use their own unique size shoe, with the idea of forcing you into sticking with their own brand of accessories.
As with microphone inputs, adaptors are available that will convert unique shoe sizes to a universal one. Check with your local camera store if you believe that you'll need such an adaptor.
If there is no shoe mount provided on your camera, it may be necessary for you to take a look at a range of camera cages external mounts to suit your device. Camera cages are an extremely popular solution, as these give you multiple mounting and handling points, which lends you the freedom to position your camera more easily - you can also use more accessories than was previously possible.
You've ticked all the boxes and you're ready to choose an on-camera VideoMic. Now you just need to decide which one, but there's so many to choose from! I can't tell you how many semi-pro videos I've seen shot where the location audio is terrible. Many amateur filmmakers will go to great lengths to get amazing shots, as they should, and then the whole illusion is shattered by audio recorded in the little front mounted mics on the camera, usually the weaklest link in a consumer camcorder that falls somewhere under "Special effects.
The sound is very accurate, very "dead," if you will, and handles spoken word very well, both indoor and outdoor. While it won't take the place of your vocal mic in post, it will save you on location for its accuracy and quality.
The camera's pinhole mic is all but useless, and this gives me camera reference audio I can trust. The rubber shock bands are available to order as a pack through your local distributor. Please use our technical support page to find your nearest distributor. We recommend an Alkaline or Lithium battery for the best possible battery life.
If you use a slightly lower power battery, the mic will work but may not meet our published specifcation. This standard shoe is suitable for the majority of camera attachments. If your camera has a different, or custom adaptor, please contact your camera manufacturer for information on converters to fit the universal shoe connection.
Basically, when the camera cannot sense an audio input signal it automatically increases the gain of the input. It is increased so much that the noise floor in the camera microphone amplifier becomes audible. The AGC can be disabled on some cameras and it is worth checking with you camera manufacturer for information on this, which can sometimes require a firmware update to the camera.
We recommend setting your audio levels manually to achieve an optimum signal to noise ratio and disabling the AGC of the camera. If you have a question or a support enquiry about the VideoMic head over to our contact page to get in touch or locate your local distributor here.

This is a must have for any DSLR video shooters! This is a great sounding mic, offering good, clean audio, straight from the camera. I also prefer the size and build of this mic to that of its predecessor. This super-cardioid condenser mic from Rode offers a compact design with excellent polar sensitivity to the front and sides.
This makes voices clear but natural. Ambient sound is nicely controlled with the High Pass Filter switch, and the clever shock mounting helps to minimise sound from movement and handling the camera. It's easy on the wallet, a snap to carry, and gets the job done. For those looking to move beyond the internal microphone on a digital SLR or camcorder, the VideoMic Pro can achieve excellent audio in a compact, lightweight and relatively inexpensive package - 8.
Even the shockmount has been updated and shrunk to make whatever rig you are putting it on that much tighter and lighter without sacrificing quality sound For the new size of the device and the features it has, it's well worth the extra money.
Overall no camera rig would be complete without it. I particularly like the size and look of the Pro model but the sound is stellar. That's not to say that the VideoMic was bad It's like on a scale of 1 to 10, the VideoMic was a 9 and the Pro model is a You guys hit a home run with this model and I get a lot of people asking questions about it when I'm shooting.
Of course, I'm encouraging them to get one of their own. It's a great price for an excellent mic. The sound is a big improvement over the built-in mic on my Canon HF camcorder. I think this product is a winner. Been using the VideoMic Pro on a shoot in the US for the past two weeks and couldn't be more delighted! Absolutely fantastic product and couldn't be happier with it! Have to say I'm liking the mic a lot already.
Its small enough to fit in my cmaera bag and sounds as good or better than the Rode NTG The shock mount is perfect too. I'm very pleased with the quality that this mic offers without being very big in size or budget, deffinantly a great buy! I bought this to use on my t2i. It's much less conspicuous, and much less bulky. The sound is a gigantic improvement over the onboard mic. For people who want quality sound, but aren't audiophiles, this is a fantastic buy.
I previously owned the Rode Video Mic and was impressed by the quality, price, and sound so once I heard the Pro was announced I jumped on it. I personally use the mic at Weddings, Concerts, and other events that have loud surroundings and this VMP picks up clean sound and easier to move around with. Never used a video mic before. The mic was about 20 feet from the bride and groom and they were facing away from the mic. The recording was perfect! I could hear the bride and groom as if I was standing right next to them.
I thought the design and build quality was very well done. I also received extra shock bands. The size of the mic was nice and compact.
I'm very happy with the purchase. We're using this microphone on a Nikon D for mostly family videography and really love the build quality of this product. Its audio performance is astonishing and is recommended to use instead of a built-in mic. It doesn't feature stereo, but the mono is put on both channels, so there's no downside to that.
It sounds very clean and has many options filters, etc to adjust it to exactly your needs. We picked this one over the non Pro version because of the shorter build length and the new rubber band design. It was worth the extra money.
